How to compress an Image
One of the most important things every website owner should
be aware of is website load speed.
Am sure you have come across several articles or ads talking
about how important the speed of your website is. Having dealt with a similar problem in around
three to four websites, I must admit that it is not down to one sector.
In simple terms, you can’t fix such a problem by just doing
one thing. The most common causes of a heavy website include unused code
snippets and images.
In this article we look at how images affect your website
speed and how to fix it.
There are various ways to reduce the weight of the images on
your website before or after uploading them to your website.
The most commonly used method is by uploading them to an
image compression website like tinypng.
This website has a few conditions that you must observe
before trying to use it to compress your images. Here are some main ones:
1. 1. Your image must be of png or jpeg format(the
supported image formats)
2. 2. A single file must not be more than 5mbs
3. 3. You can only upload up to 20 images at a go.
One interesting feature of this website is that the image
compression is lossless. This means you can reduce the image size but retain a
sharp quality.
Tinypng does not change your image dimensions; it simply
removes unnecessary colors from the image, reducing the pixilation and
size. If you upload an 800 by 800 image,
that’s what will be downloaded after compression.
If you need to reduce the dimensions of your image, you can
use free image editing websites like canva. With these websites, you can change
the image size and orientation. Canva as example also has free templates for
different platforms.
