In our previous article on how to create a bootable flask disk, we applied the use of RUFUS, a tool that only allows the drive to hold one Operating System.
In this article, we are going to cover how to use Ventoy to create a bootable hard drive that can support mutiple Operating systems and still allow the flash disk to be used for other purposes.
What is Ventoy?
Ventoy is an open source tool used to make bootable flash drive or USB drives. Unlike traditional tools(RUFUS included), Ventoy allows you to simply drag and drop ISO files onto your USB drive.
This means you can have multiple operating systems on a single drive without the need to reformat it each time. For anyone dealing with computers and nstallations, Ventoy is a must-have in your toolkit
As an open-source tool, ventoy is completely free and is constantly improved by a community of developers.
How to get Ventoy to your computer
Before you use Ventoy to create your bootable drive, you need to download and install it on your system.
There are two ways to download Ventoy; through their github page or via the website
Follow this steps to install Ventoy:
1. Go to Ventoy.net and click on the downloads tab
2. Choose your preferred download type(.zip, tar.gz, or .iso) and download it (You will be redirected to sourceforge.net to complete the download)
3. Extract the dowloaded zipped file. You can use tools like 7-zip, WinRaR for Windows OS.
For Linux Operating systems, open your terminal and type {unzip file_name.zip) and run it.
4. The unzipped file will be saved in the current location if you do not select a specific folder(Mostly the downloads folder)
5. Navigate to the folder where the file is and run the .exe file in Windows to start the installation process(You may need to run it as administrator)
How to Create a Bootable Flash Drive with Ventoy
1. Insert your USB drive into your computer. Make sure to back up any important data on the drive, as the installation process will format it.
2. With Ventoy installed, simply drag and drop your desired ISO files onto the USB drive. There's no need to worry about making the drive bootable; Ventoy handles that for you.
3.To boot your device from Ventoy, restart your computer and boot from the USB drive. You'll be greeted with a Ventoy menu displaying all the ISO files you've added. Select the OS you want to boot, and you're good to go.
What Operating Systems does Ventoy support?
Ventoy can be used with most Windows versions; from Windows XP to Windows 11. It also supports other OSs inlcuding Linux Distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora and Chrome OS.
One interesting feature of Ventoy is secure boot. Ventoy supports secure boot, ensuring compatibility with modern UEFI systems. This feature adds an extra layer of security, making your bootable drive more reliable.
Can Ventoy have Errors?
There are instances when the creation of bootable hard drive may fail leading to a failure in OS boot. This may be as a result of a corrupt or incomplete ISO file.
In some cases, the quality of the flash disk used can also affect the process. Ensure you download the right ISO files and use high quality USB drives.
Other tools related to Ventoy are RUFUS(See how to use here), UNetbootin, and YUMI, all of which are yet to match the standards of Ventoy.
